Tubal Disease

At Fertility Specialists of Houston we believe it is essential for our patients to understand what is happening to them every step of the way. We want you to maintain a feeling of control about the process. After your initial consultation our physician will be able to determine a preliminary diagnosis and make testing recommendations.

Once the initial work-up is complete and test results are reviewed, a diagnosis can be pinpointed and a treatment plan begun. We will educate you thoroughly about your particular diagnosis, but we have provided an overview below. Please contact us if you have any questions about this information or your own specific situation.

Tubal disease is a disorder in which one, or both, of the fallopian tubes become damaged or blocked due to scar tissue, infection or tubal sterilization, also referred to as tubal ligation. An obstructed fallopian tube impacts fertility either by decreasing the ability to pick up the released egg of the ovary (reducing the chances of fertilization) or by preventing the fertilized egg (embryo) from moving into the uterus.

Treatment of tubal infertility may initially be attempted surgically and the level of success depends on the severity of the damage to the tube. Additionally, surgery may increase the risk of a tubal pregnancy which could possibly be life threatening if not diagnosis and treated early. Ultimately, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can bypass the damaged fallopian tubes and offer a very good chance for pregnancy.
