Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
At Fertility Specialists of Houston we believe it is essential for our patients to understand what is happening to them every step of the way. We want you to maintain a feeling of control about the process. After your initial consultation our physician will be able to determine a preliminary diagnosis and make testing recommendations.
Once the initial work-up is complete and test results are reviewed, a diagnosis can be pinpointed and a treatment plan begun. We will educate you thoroughly about your particular diagnosis, but we have provided an overview below. Please contact us if you have any questions about this information or your own specific situation.
Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), or repeated miscarriages, is defined as having experienced two or more spontaneous pregnancy losses. Miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, and affects nearly 15% of women. An individual miscarriage is due to genetically abnormal embryo in 60% of cases. Reasons for repeated pregnancy loss include a chromosomal abnormality in one or both partners, a structural problem of the uterus, a hormonal disorder (including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or an autoimmune condition. Following a thorough evaluation, a definite diagnosis is not found in 40% of patients.
Treatment for RPL is individualized based on testing results. When no clear cause is determined, a successful pregnancy can often be achieved with close monitoring (lab work and ultrasound) and supportive care. This careful monitoring apparently reduces the stress associated with recurrent pregnancy loss thereby improving outcomes.
