Artificial Insemination
At Fertility Specialists of Houston we believe it is essential for our patients to understand what is happening to them every step of the way. We want you to maintain a feeling of control about the process. After your initial consultation our physician will be able to determine a preliminary diagnosis and make testing recommendations.
Once the initial work-up is complete and test results are reviewed, a diagnosis can be pinpointed and a treatment plan begun. We will educate you thoroughly about your particular diagnosis, but we have provided an overview below. Please contact us if you have any questions about this information or your own specific situation.
Artificial insemination (AI) a procedure we perform by collecting sperm and place it into a female's uterus (intrauterine), or cervix (intracervical) using artificial means rather than by intercourse.
A semen sample is taken from the male partner, and is processed by our lab to separate the semen from the seminal fluid. A catheter is then used to inject the processed sperm directly into the uterus or cervix. This process maximizes the number of sperm cells that are placed in the uterus and thus increases the possibility of conception.
Younger women usually have higher rates of success compared to women over age 35, but the average success rate for AI is better then 10 percent in one cycle. With AI, the success is mostly dependent on the health of the sperm and the female partner's fertility problems.
